Under gatstenen

I samband med vernissagen av utställningen Under gatstenen bjuder vi in till ett samtal mellan konstnären Anne Tallentire och utställningens curator Karin Bähler Lavér.
Under gatstenen är en grupputställning som i olika konstnärliga format – skulptur och installation, fotografi och film – undersöker hur byggda miljöer, institutionella strukturer och historiska krafter formar våra liv, särskilt i tider av kris, brist eller förtryck.
Utställningen samlar konstnärer från skilda geografiska sammanhang och generationer. Den granskar det offentliga rummet ur flera politiska synvinklar, inte minst med fokus på de mer eller mindre uppenbara infrastrukturer som understödjer (och reglerar) våra kollektiva erfarenheter.
Med hjälp av konstnärliga metoder som reduktion och analys, förflyttning och förtätning, pastisch och humor belyser de utställda verken de rumsliga, sociala och symboliska systemen bakom samhällslivet. Konstnärerna har ägnat särskild uppmärksamhet åt de glapp och sprickor som gör dessa system genomträngliga.
I en tid präglad av världsomfattande och sammanflätade kriser av ekologisk, teknologisk, ekonomisk och kulturell natur slår Under gatstenen ett slag för konstens möjligheter. Konsten har alltid haft, och har fortfarande, en estetisk och politisk potential att synliggöra de villkor vi lever under. Dess ambition har också alltid varit att utmana oss och omforma våra liv.
Utställningen erbjuder utrymme för reflektion kring den konstnärliga friheten, hur vi kan utöva och ompröva den. De centrala frågorna är: Vad innebär det att föreställa sig, skapa och agera tillsammans i dag? Kan konsten bidra till att identifiera de mellanrum där nya former av solidaritet och frihet kan slå rot?
De medverkande konstnärerna är Anders Hergum (Norge, f. 1983), Valérie Jouve (Frankrike, f. 1964), Yuko Mohri (Japan, f. 1980), Kasra Seyed Alikhani (Iran/Sverige, f. 1987), Anne Tallentire (Nordirland/England, f. 1949) och Carla Zaccagnini (Brasilien/Sverige, f. 1973). Dessutom visas verk av Lygia Clark (Brasilien, 1920–88).
Utställningens kurator Karin Bähler Lavér (Sverige, f. 1989) är konstnärlig ledare för skēnē – rum för samtida konst i Malmö och har tidigare organiserat utställningar för bland annat Kalmar konstmuseum och Mint konsthall i Stockholm. Hon var också en av kuratorerna för Luleåbiennalen 2020.

Underneath the Paving Stone

In conjunction with the opening of the exhibition Underneath the Paving Stone, we warmly welcome you to a conversation between artist Anne Tallentire and the exhibition’s curator, Karin Bähler Lavér.
Underneath the Paving Stone is a group exhibition with works in various artistic formats – sculpture and installation, photography and film – that explore how built environments, institutional structures and historical forces shape our lives, especially in times of crisis, scarcity or repression.
The exhibition gathers artists from different generations and geographical contexts. It scrutinises public space from several political angles, not least focusing on the more or less visible infrastructure that supports (and regulates) our collective experience.
Using artistic methods such as reduction and analysis, displacement and condensation, pastiche and humour, the exhibited works cast light on the spatial, social and symbolic systems underpinning social life. The artists have been particularly attentive to the gaps and cracks that render these systems permeable.
In times marked by a global entanglement of ecological, technological, economic and cultural crises, Underneath the Paving Stone breaks a lance for the potentiality of art itself. It has always had, and still has, the aesthetic and political capacity to visualise the conditions we live under. Moreover, its ambition has always been to challenge us and refashion our lives.
The exhibition offers space for reflection on artistic freedom and how it may be exercised and re-examined. The central issues are: What does it mean to imagine, create and act together today? Can art help identify the in-between spaces where new forms of solidarity and freedom may take root?
The participating artists are Anders Hergum (Noway, 1983), Valérie Jouve (France, 1964), Yuko Mohri (Japan, 1980), Kasra Seyed Alikhani (Iran/Sweden, 1987), Anne Tallentire (Northern Ireland/England, 1949) and Carla Zaccagnini (Brazil/Sweden, 1973). Works by Lygia Clark (Brazil, 1920–88) are also on display.
The curator of the exhibition, Karin Bähler Lavér (Sweden, 1989), is Artistic Director of skēnē – space for contemporary art in Malmö and has previously curated exhibitions for the Kalmar Art Museum, Kunsthalle Mint in Stockholm and other venues. She was also one of the curators for the Luleå Biennial in 2020.
