Efter många bra förslag på senaste mötet kan vi nu avslöja att terminens första bok blir…🥁🥁🥁 “En gentleman i Moskva” av Amor Towles. 🎩🪆
En kort beskrivning av boken:
“I juni 1922 eskorteras greve Alexander Rostov från en rättegångssal i Moskva till det fashionabla Hotell Metropol – beläget mittemot Kreml – där han under flera år bott i en lyxsvit. Han har stått åtalad för en dikt han skrivit och med nöd och näppe undgått dödsstraff; istället döms han till husarrest på obestämd tid och tvingas flytta till ett litet vindsrum på hotellet. Medan Sovjetunionen genomgår decennier av våldsamma omvälvningar försöker Rostov skapa en ny mening och ett annat slags rikedom i sitt liv. After many great suggestions at our latest meeting, we can now reveal that the first book of the term will be… 🥁🥁🥁 “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles. 🎩🪆
A short description of the book:
“In June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is escorted from a courtroom in Moscow to the fashionable Hotel Metropol—located directly opposite the Kremlin—where he has lived for several years in a luxury suite. He has been tried for a poem he wrote and has narrowly escaped the death penalty; instead, he is sentenced to house arrest for an indefinite period and forced to move into a small attic room in the hotel. As the Soviet Union undergoes decades of violent upheaval, Rostov tries to create a new sense of meaning and a different kind of wealth in his life. At the beginning of the story, he meets Nina, a nine-year-old girl who becomes his guide into the hotel’s curious world.
Amor Towles combines the gravity of Soviet history with great narrative joy and life-affirming humor.
