Old Jail Museum Open Day

Did you know Petone was the first place in New Zealand to have a Police force? Find out about this and other interesting Petone stories in the Old Jail Museum.

Come to the Old Jail Museum – a well-preserved former lockup. See an exhibition on Policing in Petone from 1840.

Either our Heritage Office or a JSP Ambassador will be onsite.

Built in 1908 on Elizabeth Street, it was once the most senior station in the Hutt Valley with ten constables and one sergeant. In the early 1950s, the Police Station and Jail were moved behind the old courthouse at 13 Elizabeth Street. Police used the courthouse as an office, but the lockup continued to be used – mainly for intoxicated offenders – until 1978.

Health & Safety:
If raining, the ramp leading to the Old Jail Museum can be a little bit slippery when going down it. We will let people know, and if necessary, our Heritage Officer of JSP Ambassador can help people walk down the ramp.
