The Atari Punk Console (APC) is a beginner-friendly synthesizer/noisemaker that uses 555 Timer ICs to create fun 8-bit LoFi square-wave sounds. This hands-on workshop is ideal for those new to electronics, covering circuit diagram schematics, soldering basics, learning about basic electronic components, and sound synthesis (the best part!). All necessary materials are provided, though participants are encouraged to bring their own soldering irons (limited available) and enclosures for their projects. Enclosures can be anything from old plastic containers, wood boxes, cans, or anything that has a hollow space to fit wires and circuit boards—use your imagination and have fun! The workshop is open to all, including kids with adult supervision. A bonus oscillator kit will be available for purchase for those interested in further DIY projects.
Christopher M. Lavery, who performs as godzillalaughs, creates electronic music and soundscapes predominantly using modular synthesizers and other noisemakers. He has led workshops and classes nationally for over 20 years, demonstrating the power of DIY electronics under his series entitled 9Volt Workshops. Lavery is also a visual artist whose work ranges from sound and video to sculpture and installation, and was recently the toolmaker in residence at Signal Culture in Loveland, CO.
