About the event

How to Be an Ally for the Trans Community w/Diamond Owens

For the topic of the speaking presentation we cover:

-what things are currently affecting the trans community
-what the trans community currently needs help with
-and also what things folks can do to support the trans community.

The Umbrella Stand is a unique thrift store with a queer vibe that designates a portion of its profits to a benefit program that helps cover service fees for folks needing appointments with any of the service providers currently offering their services in our sibling store Genderworx.

Through TheUmbrellaStand.com folks can currently book an appointment in Genderworx with a makeup artist, employment counselor or a Masc/Fem/NB clothing specialist.

Their range of services include some of the following:

-makeup lessons
-masculine grooming instruction
-drag and natural makeup applications
-wig fitting/care instruction/purchase
-resume building
-job searching
-interviewing skills
-clothing aesthetic exploration
-pre/post gender trans. wardrobe update
-individualized personal shopping

We’re hoping to soon add seamstress/tailor and legal specialist to our list of available providers.

All of the service providers currently available through Genderworx:

-are independent small business owners
-are trained career professionals
-have special focuses in gender/queer supportive services within thier fields
-are heavily pre vetted for affirming-ness of everyone

The Umbrella Stand and Genderworx offer a means of making gender supportive services more accessible, but also a means of making them more affordable without expecting the professionals providing them to always work pro bono or at a discounted rate.

Service providers of any kind that focus on/support the queer & trans communities are as deserving and in need of the same service fees that thier NON queer & trans focused/supportive peers charge, just as much as queer and trans people are deserving and in need of professional specialized services.

Our providers do not charge any more or less for thier services in Genderworx than they do anywhere else thier services are available and they are also price competitive within thier fields in regard to thier level of experience.

The retail store just had its 3 yr anniversary and is now providing enough funding to The Umbrella Programs “Unicorn Care Fund” to cover 15% of any clients providers fees or goods purchased if needed. We are growing this percentage every year to eventually reach full coverage for as many folks as possible.

The Umbrella Program is currently working with an attny to gain non-profit status, and we hope to offer tax receipts for in store goods donations soon.

I appreciate your time today in getting to know The Umbrella Stand. Please feel welcome to stop in anytime to learn more.
