We invite you to join us for a special FREE LATi Sessions Event, where we open the doors to everyone.
For this special event we're joined on Wednesday November 12th by Dr. Naëmi Leo & Prof. Kelly Morrison of Loughborough University who'll talk about Nanofabrication & Magnetic Materials.
As Loughborough Fair will be kicking off the night of the event, we'll be shifting location to Loughborough Surface Analysis on Prince William Road, Loughborough.
Dr. Naëmi Leo - UKRI Future Leader Fellow - Loughborough University
Prof. Kelly Morrison - Head of Department (Physics) - Loughborough University
5.30PM - Networking and Drinks
5:50PM - Introductions
6.00PM - Dr. Naëmi Leo - Magnetic Metamaterials: From Science to Computation
6.30PM - Prof. Kelly Morrison - Nanofabrication in a glovebox: in-situ patterning and analysis of devices
7.00PM - Networking, drinks and light snacks.
7.30PM - Close
The functionalities of metamaterials arise from tailoring properties of basic building blocks as well as designing the interaction between these elements, e.g., by placing the building block in a regular array.
Such metamaterials can be created at the nanoscale, such as by the nanolithography toolkit we have available at the Physics department of Loughborough university, to nano-3D-printing.
Dr. Naëmi Leo will introduce the basic concepts for the design of magnetic metamaterials and explain some of their interesting properties, from answering basic science questions to how they can be harnessed for unconventional computational approaches.
Prof. Kelly Morrison will give an overview of some of the challenges of integrating the Nanofrazor into a thin film deposition system, from inert gas to ultra high vacuum without exposing to air.
As an example, Kelly will discuss the options for greyscale patterning of metasurfaces to impose strain on 2D materials and the challenges this could pose in characterisation with electron microscopy, Raman and scanning tunnelling microscopy.
Finally, Kelly will discuss possible routes for scaling up fabrication of such surfaces, with, for example nano-imprint lithography.
Dr Naëmi Leo is fascinated by emergent phenomena in magnetic materials, especially those arising in patterned nanoscale structures, and how these effects can be harnessed for future technologies related to spintronics and computation.
After various international research positions, in 2024 she joined Loughborough University as a UKRI Future Leader Fellow.
Within her fellowship project, she creates optically reconfigurable functional metamaterials by combining key concepts from nanophotonics, nanoscale heat transfer, and magnetism.
Professor Kelly Morrison specialises in the characterisation of magnetic materials for energy applications, including magnetic refrigeration, thermal energy harvesting and spintronics.
In 2021 she led a Strategic Equipment grant that resulted in £2M investment in an integrated nanolithography system.
This equipment bid brought together the Nanofrazor, two thin film deposition chambers and STM/AFM in a single, connected system that enables device preparation without exposing the sample to air.
Her research interests now include the use of the Nanofrazor for grayscale patterning and possible upscaling of this process for metamaterial applications.
