Rewriting the Script: Adoptees Take the Mic
Emerson College - Bordy Theater
Join us for an unforgettable evening amplifying adoptee voices and perspectives. Rewriting the Script: Adoptees Take the Mic is more than a conversation—it’s a movement. In a safe and supportive space, adoptees will share stories that challenge stereotypes, break open long-held narratives, and celebrate the power of lived experience.
At the center of this event are two trailblazers in media and storytelling: and . Both transracial adoptees, they have spent years shaping how adoption is portrayed in Hollywood, ensuring that adoptee perspectives are not just included but are authentically centered. Angela—author of You Should Be Grateful: Stories of Race, Identity and Transracial Adoption—consulted on NBC’s This Is Us and Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill, and her candid conversation on Red Table Talk drew over 10 million viewers, sparking a national conversation. Marissa—Creator, Showrunner, and Executive Producer of Hulu’s Black Cake and ABC’s Women of the Movement—is celebrated for her character-driven storytelling and has been honored with an NAACP Image Award and two Humanitas Prizes. Together, they’ll pull back the curtain on the entertainment industry, dissect common missteps, and explore what’s possible when adoptees take creative control.
The conversation will be moderated by Emerson College alum ('14) , CFO of the Adoptee Mentoring Society and a transracial adoptee, whose leadership reflects the future of adoptee-centered advocacy.
Following the discussion, there will be time for audience Q&A, giving you the chance to engage directly with Angela and Marissa. Copies of their books will also be available for purchase, with the opportunity to have them signed by the authors.
This event is your chance to listen, learn, and be inspired. Whether you’re connected to adoption personally or simply curious about the power of authentic storytelling, you’ll leave with new insights about belonging, identity, and creativity.
Don’t miss this evening of truth-telling, artistry, and transformation.
