California Native Plant Cyanotype Printing with Hannah Perez

Due to popular demand, we are offering this unique program once again! Capture stills of nature to last you long beyond the summer. Cyanotype is a unique art form harnessing the power of the sun. In this class, we’ll be making photographs itilizing California native plant materials and our own artistic visions! Deemed one of the earliest photographic printing methods ever discovered, but did you know it was popularized by a female botanist? How cool is that? Join us as we explore the significance and techniques behind this medium. It’s easy to do and doesn’t require any special equipment. So prepare to get our hands dirty and create your own personal piece of art to take home. Open to all experience levels!

Time permitting, this new program may include an inspirational walk through the Theodore Payne Foundation's beautiful demonstration gardens.

All materials will be provided! A portion of this class will be held outdoors, sun protection and a water bottle are strongly recommended.

Optional: Students may bring stencils, photographic negatives, or their own pressed plants & flowers.

Hannah Perez is a naturalist and multimedia artist with a background in photography. Working mainly in analog methods, she found her love for the darkroom in a high school photography class, and went on to study photography in college, with a special interest in alternative printing methods such as cyanotype, lumen printing, and risograph printing. Inspired by artists such as Anna Atkins, Man Ray, and Jean Cocteau, her artwork speaks to nature, existential philosophy, and the surreal spectrum of life. Hannah is the Creative Lead at Theodore Payne Foundation.
