Workshop: Reconstructing Style
Style is the flavor of our writing, it is constructed of the tools we use consciously and unconsciously, it is made of our influences, our experiences, and our perspectives on the nature of language. Writers are often known by their styles as much as by the content they create. Let us reconstruct our understanding of style together and unpack what it can look like across a range of author influences. In this workshop we will examine our own styles, alongside those of others, and write across them to create something entirely new.
Month: September
Instructor: Sarah Elizabeth Schantz

Workshop: My Own Alphabet
Using letters from the alphabet, participating writers will utilize free-association and automatic writing to generate ideas and call upon their memories and their imagination to begin drafting and crafting their own CNF/lyric essays, poems, fiction, or sketches. This class will primarily be a generative space. The title of the workshop pays homage to Bobbie Louise Hawkins who published a collection of stories, essays, and memoirs of the same name with Coffee House Press in 1989 (there is no need to read this book).

Workshop: The Burning Haibun
The purpose of the Burning Haibun is to reveal what is hidden within the original context, or to demonstrate the fragmentation of thought and memory. Burning Haibuns are often a way to process trauma by providing a method to cut to the heart of the matter. Sometimes we create by erasing. This process often reveals much to the writer regarding their own creative practice and thought patterns.
