Science + Spirits

Dr. Mary Huffman is pleased to return to Spirit Hound to share more about working with beneficial fire in today’s world of wildfires. This time she will introduce us to how Native American tribes have used fire for millennia to care for their homelands, plants and animals, as well as their people . . . and how they are revitalizing their traditional practices to help bring fire back into balance.

Since the mid-1980s, Mary has been involved in prescribed burning as a staff member of The Nature Conservancy. She earned her doctoral degree from Colorado State University in 2010, studying community-based fire management among people of Mayan descent in Chiapas, MX. Mary currently serves as the director of the Indigenous Peoples Burning Network.
