Fall Study for Adults Begins September 30
Tuesday Evenings, 6:30-8:00 PM
Join Pastor Susie for a 7-week fall Bible study utilizing the book, From Judgment to Hope: A Study on the Prophets by Walter Brueggemann. The class will take place in Gabrielson Chapel and on Zoom on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM from September 30 to November 18 (no class October 28 when the Board of Stewards meets).
Walter Brueggemann argues that the prophets were emancipated imaginers of alternative. Emancipated from the dominant thinking of their societies, the prophets imagined an alternative reality and invited listeners to join them in their commitment to that new reality.
As we explore the Major Prophets, Minor Prophets, and the prophets of the Persian Age, all found in our Old Testament, we will consider what they offered to their first audiences and what they have to say to us now. The prophets experienced personal challenges as well as societal collapse and catastrophe. They wrestled honestly with their understandings of God and faith in the midst of these experiences. And their poetry echoes through the ages calling people of faith to dare to imagine an alternative reality with them, to remember the heart of our covenantal relationships with God and with one another, and to collectively live toward a more just and loving world.
