About the event

Courage, Guts & Imagination!
Rumduol 2025 presents: Courage, Guts & Imagination!
Sept 7, 2025, 1 pm-230pm
Kubo: 3976 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach, CA 90807

Join us for this wonderful afternoon of learning about local leaders in Long Beach, including their journey as activists, writers, and community advocates.

Panelists include:
Dr. Sara Pol-Lim is an author of “Coming to Terms with Historical Trauma” and co-author of an article published in the Journal of Loss and Trauma. She worked on various projects, including the Cambodian American Studies Model Curriculum and Mental Health Awareness Talk. She served as the Regional Program Manager for the California Complete Count—Census 2020 from 2018 to 2020, focusing on undercounted populations. From 2007 to 2015, she was the Executive Director of the United Cambodian Community in Long Beach, where she helped prevent its closure. Driven to restore educational values in her community, she earned a doctorate in educational leadership from California State University, Long Beach, in 2018.

Sayon Syprasoeuth is a visual artist who uses images and storytelling to connect Cambodian people to their culture. With his Master of Fine Art, Sayon Syprasoeuth collages and pictures are reflective of his journey as a Cambodian refugee—from his shocking exile from his childhood village on the Cambodian-Thai border, to his scary passage into Thailand countryside and his lost boyhood in a refugee camp where making art was his imagination safeguard—to his passage from his Buddhist-animist land to Christian America. His work holds fast to his connection to the Cambodian spirit-enhancing land, cross-cultural dimensions, and his drive to animate Apsara and other essential images of beauty alongside the grotesque. He has used his visual arts as a narrative form to tell stories of tragedy. He challenges the audience to remember and reflect on what it is to be back home again.

There will be a Q&A session and book signing at the end.
