About the event

Ár Logainmneacha Comhroinnte - Reflections on Local Place-names
Explore the linguistic origins of local place-names, the meanings behind them as well as the stories and people hidden within them.

About this Event

Conradh na Gaeilge runs the Ár Logainmneacha Comhroinnte | People & Place scheme across schools and community groups in the north. The scheme helps children and communities look at the common heritage we share in the Irish language, particularly through the lens of our local place names. In this workshop, we will explore the linguistic origins of local place-names, the meanings behind them as well as the stories and people hidden within them.

Déanann an Conradh an scéim Ár Logainmneacha Comhroinnte | People & Place a reáchtáil i scoileanna agus le pobail éagsúla sna sé chontae mar léiriú ar an oidhreacht chomhroinnte atá againn sa Ghaeilge. Is scéim feasachta í seo a mhíníonn an nasc idir logainmneacha áitiúla agus an Ghaeilge. Sa cheardlann seo beidh deis againn plé a dhéanamh ar logainmneacha áitiúla sa cheantar, ciall s’acu agus na scéalta atá ag baint leo.

Acknowledgements:

This event is part of the Waterside Together Festival 2025! Come one, come all as we celebrate the wealth and breadth of green spaces that the Waterside has to offer. For a week in September, let’s forget our differences, as we celebrate a new era of what it means to live in the Waterside.

About Waterside Together

Waterside Together is a shared green spaces events and festival project which aims to reanimate spaces that are perceived as belonging to the ‘other community’, transforming them into areas that are open, welcoming, and safe for all members of the Waterside community. Programmes will be delivered in parks, greenways and community spaces, targeting a range of participants including families, children and young people, older people, and members of the BAME community. Part of the programme will be a shared spaces festival that promotes the collective usage of the green infrastructure in the Waterside and which encourages the movement of people to areas that they would not usually use for recreational purposes.

A note about our funder

Waterside Together is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) and funded under the theme of Community Regeneration and Transformation, and it is also funded through Derry City and Strabane District Council’s PEACEPLUS Local Co-Designed Action Plan.

Ár Logainmneacha Comhroinnte: The People & Place Project is ran by Conradh na Gaeilge and funded by The Department of Foreign Affairs' Reconciliation Fund.
