On Songs of the Highland, Songs of the Sea, The Real McKenzies breathe new life into twelve time-worn anthems that have echoed across taverns and tides for centuries. Dropping November 18th via Fat Wreck Chords, the album marks the band’s 30th anniversary and sees them giving traditional Scottish ballads and sea shanties a fierce Celtic punk overhaul. From the bagpipe blaze of “Scotland the Brave” to gritty takes on “Drunken Sailor” and “Sloop John B,” these songs connect past and present with roaring guitars, booming camaraderie and a sailor’s heart.

Frontman Paul McKenzie’s heritage and lifelong love of the sea run deep throughout. Having captained his own ship until the pandemic forced him ashore, he channels that same spirit into songs that shaped him — from Robert Burns classics like “A Red, Red Rose” to the emotional “Swansea Town,” sung here by Brenna Red of The Last Gang.
