Myddelton Square
Myddelton Square, London, United Kingdom
This area just south of the Angel Islington was once green fields rolling downhill towards the old City of London. From the early 1600s it became the terminus and distribution centre of the New River, bringing fresh water into London from Hertfordshire. Several ancient springs and wells became fashionable spas and pleasure gardens in the 17C and 18C, then as London expanded, residential squares and streets sprang up from the early 1800s.
We will stroll around the pretty streets and green spaces and hear more of the long and fascinating local history. The historic New River Head buildings are currently being restored to become the new home for the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration. Whilst this won't be open until next year, we will be able to glimpse and hear more about the original role of the complex and the ongoing restoration.
This is one of a series of monthly walks that Islington Guides run in conjunction with Islington Council, with emphasis on gentle walks through the many green spaces in the Borough.
