About this Event

Grasping the Nettle: Nature Recovery in the New Era of Strategic Planning

The manner in which we regulate the built and natural environments is evolving rapidly. Recent years have seen a range of new measures set out in legislation and in government policy, which aim to protect and enhance the natural environment, whilst also enabling the built environment sector to deliver the quantum of development that is required across the country.

With the imminent introduction of a new strategic planning regime in England, many of these existing policy objectives will soon be delivered through a new institutional structure – intended to allow greater coordination of development and environmental protection at a “larger than local” scale.

As with all changes in Government policy, this will present both challenges and opportunities for those of us working across the built environment sector to deliver sustainable development.

As this new system comes into focus, this event will explore the intersection between the new strategic planning regime and the Government’s policies on securing nature recovery. Our expert panel will set out their view on how strategic planning will contribute to securing nature recovery, and how practitioners across the built environment sector, including planners, will need to adapt.

The session is registered with the CPD registration service and will help attendees to:

1. Gain clarity on the emerging regime – Understand what we know so far about the return of strategic planning, including timelines and implications for policy and delivery.

2. Understand the role of LNRS and wider tools – Explore how LNRS, Environmental Outcome Reports, and the Nature Recovery Fund can be used strategically.

3. Explore practical delivery routes – Learn how nature recovery at scale can be embedded in growth option testing, infrastructure planning and plan-making.

4. Hear cross-sector perspectives – Developers, planners, and academics will share practical insights on balancing nature recovery with housing and infrastructure priorities.

5. Identify actions for their role – Leave with a clearer understanding of how they, in their own professional context, can influence the strategic planning agenda to deliver for nature.
