About the event

Why Are All Prices Going Up, but My Pay Isn't?
This online international seminar series is built upon the joint Lecture Series in Advanced Political Economy (SAPE) by SOAS University of London and The New School for Social Research in New York in 2021-23. With an additional partner The Center for Heterodox Economics (CHE) at the University of Tulsa, this seminar series will connect the academic discussions to the real-world power struggle and workers’ everyday lives.

We will talk about current affairs, trends in production and work, and their implications on trade unions and the working-class movement. Each week, we will invite leading experts on the subject and analyse what’s been going on by identifying key challenges.

Together with the audience, we want to think about how we can fight against the challenges and build a movement toward a more systematic change.

Why Are All Prices Going Up, but My Pay Isn't? will be delivered by Ramaa Vasudevan and Paulo dos Santos.

Ramaa joined the Economics department at Colorado State University in 2007. Her Ph.D. in economics from New School University, New York, focused on the political economy of international trade and finance, while her M.Phil at the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum, India, was a study about the evolution of labor markets in colonial India. Her main research interests are international finance, open economy macroeconomics, and the political economy of development and finance.

Paulo is Associate Professor of Economics at The New School for Social Research. He is a mathematical political economist. His research engages with the social content of market outcomes and institutional structures in contemporary capitalism, and with the development of robust formalisms that can enable conceptual and observational work on these areas.

Application deadline: 29 October 2025
