L’Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, fondata da Ton Koopman nel 1979 e nota in tutto il mondo per le sue interpretazioni di Händel e Bach, chiude l’80ª edizione delle Settimane Musicali di Ascona con un capolavoro barocco: Athalia, oratorio in tre atti composto da Georg Friedrich Händel nel 1733.
💫 La storia: il dramma biblico racconta l’ascesa e la caduta della regina Athalia, spietata e assetata di potere, e il giovane Joas, erede legittimo nascosto, che guiderà Israele al trionfo della fede e della giustizia. Emozione, tensione e maestosi cori si alternano a momenti di introspezione spirituale e virtuosismo vocale.

🎶 Il suono barocco: corni, flauti, arciliuto, organo e violoncello solista completano l’orchestrazione originale, restituendo le tinte epiche e l’impatto teatrale dell’opera. Alcuni numeri, come l’aria senza basso continuo del giovane Joas, mostrano l’inventiva straordinaria di Händel.
🌍 Un ensemble di riferimento: Ton Koopman ha guidato ABO & ABC in tournées internazionali e registrazioni premiate, incluse le integrali delle Cantate di Bach e delle opere di Buxtehude. Nel 2024, ABO ha celebrato il 45° anniversario insieme all’80° compleanno di Koopman.

The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, founded by Ton Koopman in 1979 and renowned worldwide for its Handel and Bach interpretations, closes the 80th Settimane Musicali di Ascona with a Baroque masterpiece: Athalia, Handel’s three-act oratorio composed in 1733.
💫 The story: This biblical drama tells of Queen Athalia’s ruthless rise and fall, and the young heir Joas, who will lead Israel to faith and justice. Powerful emotion, tension, majestic choruses, and moments of intimate reflection alternate with extraordinary vocal virtuosity.

🌍 A world-class ensemble: ABO & ABC have toured internationally and recorded award-winning albums, including the complete Bach Cantatas and works by Buxtehude. In 2024, ABO celebrated its 45th anniversary alongside Koopman’s 80th birthday.
