Wayne County Workshop: Animal Handling and Capture for Professionals

Humane animal handling and capture are central to our industry. How we perform these functions can have lasting implications for animals throughout their lives and have a direct impact on length of stay and shelter outcomes. Our understanding of animal needs has evolved from the early days of the ‘get it done by any means’ mentality to a push for fear-free methods, but animals and situations continue to challenge us. How do we put fear-free tactics into action amidst so many variables?

In this session, animal handling and capture expert John Peaveler will help you and your organization think outside the box to reimagine tools and to implement techniques to perform in a safe, effective and humane manner regardless of animal disposition. This session is suitable for both in-field and in-shelter staff. It will help operational and leadership staff navigate numerous factors, including risk, safety, animal welfare, time management, animal outcomes and best practices.
