Join us for a meaningful and community-centered afternoon of learning about traditional midwifery in El Salvador.
We will screen the documentary short film Matronas (27 minutes), which highlights the essential and often threatened work of Salvadoran midwives—women who delivered babies even during the Civil War and continue to protect their ancestral role today.
After the screening, Natividad Escobar, a traditional midwife from San Pedro Perulapán, ES and one of the founding members of the Association of Midwives Rosa Andrade, will share some of her ancestral midwifery practices. Natividad has been supporting families and practicing community healthcare for over 30 years. This is a rare opportunity to learn directly from her lived experience and cultural wisdom.
About the Film – Matronas
Salvadoran midwives have long held the responsibility of ushering life into the world, even in the most challenging times. As hospital births become the standard, their caretaking traditions are increasingly at risk of being lost to future generations.
Content note: the film includes community stories involving war, patriarchal violence, and obstetric violence.
