About the event

Caring For an Art Collection
Join us at the gallery for an afternoon of talks about managing national collections, conserving significant works of art, and restoring damaged pieces, including our permanent collection and the Hannah Cabinet. This event will include morning tea and catering provided by the gallery.

We will hear from cultural experts Anne Ryan, Curator at Art Gallery NSW, Julian Bickersteth AO, CEO at International Conservation Services, and Greg Peters, Founding Director and Chief Conservator of Patinations Conservation Services.

The talks will be followed by a tour of the gallery and exhibitions with Director Ashleigh Ralph and Curator Ineke Dane and networking drinks with the Friends of the Gallery.

Anne Ryan - Curator
Art Gallery New South Whales

Anne Ryan is Curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, where she has responsibility for the collection of Australian prints, drawings and watercolours. She studied at the Universities of Sydney and New South Wales and was the Sarah and William Holmes Scholar in the Departments of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum in 2001-02.


Julian Bickersteth AO - Founder & CEO
International Conservation Services

Julian Bickersteth AO is the founder and CEO of ICS, the conservation company that undertook the salvage and conservation of the Gallery’s art collection after the 2022 floods. Trained as a furniture conservator, Julian has recently completed a six year term as President of the International Institute for Conservation of historic and artistic works (IIC). Julian will be talking about the process of the conservation of the collection as well as reflecting more broadly on the world of art conservation.


Greg Peters - Director & Chief Conservator
Patinations Conservation Services

Greg Peters is the founding Director and Chief Conservator of Patinations Conservation Services Pty Ltd based in the Australian Capital Territory, established in 2000.

As a dedicated furniture conservator and restorer for over 30 years, Greg works with a diverse range of furniture styles and materials, combining his knowledge of traditional techniques with modern scientific approaches to conservation and restoration.

In 2000, Greg was awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship to study and work in Europe alongside world-leading conservators and in 2005 was awarded an International Specialised Skills Scholarship to conduct further research into the preservation of clear coatings and finishes.
