Awarded the status of a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011, the Berlengas is a small group of 3 major islands that are allocated 10 to 17 meters away from the coast of Peniche. The archipelago is laden with historical heritage and natural beauty that makes it a definite must-visit on everyone's list when in Portugal.
This tour will take you to the largest of the 3 islands, Berlenga Grande. Walk along the trail of the island with a local guide who will help you understand the past that presently makes this island so special. There is also a boat tour that awaits you, on which you can explore the sea caves that surround you. The last stop on your tour is a visit to the Fort of S. João Baptista, a military fortress that sits on a rocky bed and can be accessed by a stone bridge. For centuries, the fortress faithfully defended the seafarers of the beautiful archipelago.
