The Dumb (as in “silent”) Supper is a sacred ritual feast where we communicate with our ancestors and other loved ones who reside in the spirit world. This is a time to show our reverence and appreciation for the wisdom, love, and guidance they share with us. It is both a memorial to the dead and a celebration of the special bond the living share with them, especially at this time of the year when the veil between our worlds is the thinnest.
Here are a few things to keep in mind about this special, magical evening:
- This is a silent ceremony -- no one may speak during the meal. This allows each person to focus on honoring and communicating with their loved one without distraction.
- Please be prepared to silence phones and other electronics, etc. that may interrupt the silence. After the meal, we will conclude the ritual and open the circle, at which time the silence will be broken and we may speak again and share our thoughts and experiences.
- Bring a framed photo and/or memento of the loved one(s) you would like to honor in this special evening to be placed on the ancestor altar. Also, bring a note for your loved one (this will only be shared between the two of you).
- Please wear black attire.
- Bring a dish to share, it would be lovely it is a handed down family recipe. Please sign up here with what you are planning to bring to the feast:
