Soul Food Sunday: A Monthly Gathering for Community, Culture, and Connection
You asked and we listened. We heard you missed our farm meals and gatherings from our early days. Therefore, we are reintroducing Soul Food Sunday, in a new format designed to bring people together for connection, culture, and intergenerational dialogue. Each month we explore a theme rooted in Black culture, belonging, and our collective well being.
All cultures have a “soul food” tradition. Soul food traditions often involve gathering around a culturally meaningful meal to connect, remember, and pass down family and community traditions. This month we will explore the question: What is your soul food tradition? How have you kept it alive, or how would you like to bring it back? What food or community traditions would you love to see practiced more often? This prompt will guide an informal conversation to help us get to know one another in a warm and welcoming way.
Soul Food Sunday is also an opportunity to consider what it means to build Black community within Maine’s multi diasporic landscape, including African American, Afro Caribbean, Afro Latinx, African immigrant, and Afro Indigenous experiences. Through shared meals, storytelling, music, and conversation, we create space to reflect, reconnect, and strengthen community practice. Research shows that culturally grounded gatherings support mental health, reduce isolation, and build resilience, making spaces like this especially important in this moment.
This month’s gathering features a catered meal by Bab’s Table, along with storytelling, music, and plenty of laughter.
Menu:
BBQ Chicken
Collard Greens
Potato Salad
Macaronni & Cheese
Candied Yams
Peach Cobbler
Assorted beverages
We hope you will join us for nourishment, connection, and a seat at the table.
