July's "Second Special Sunday" program will feature guest speaker, David Connon. This event is free & open to the public.
Mr. Connon has been with us 4 different times in the last 7 years, & always brings a very interesting, historically accurate presentation about the UGRR in Iowa.
Join us in the big red barn at 2 p.m. on July 13th, where Mr. Connon will speak about Josiah Bushnell Grinnell.
“Preacher”, “congressman” “negro stealer”: he was called all of those things during his life. Mr. Connon will tell the story of racism, as well as noble actions and will highlight abolitionist John Brown’s visit to the city of Grinnell and Grinnell’s first riot over the presence of fugitive slaves in the public schools.
Mr. Connon belongs to the Humanities Iowa Speaker’s Bureau and is an independent researcher and writer researching the Iowa Underground Railroad. He works as an historical interpreter at Living History Farms and is the great-great-grandson of two Union veterans.
The house will be also be open for tours. There is no cost for the Second Special Sunday program.
The House tour fee is $5 for persons who have high school aged & older. Children are free.
Bring your lawn chairs and join us for an interesting learning experience. Refreshments will be available.
