Rode Lijn voor KU Leuven
De KU Leuven werkt in 52 projecten samen met 26 Israëlische partners of bedrijven die Israël bewapenen. Het overzicht vind je op
https://academiccomplicity.be/. Het gros van die samenwerkingen gebeurt in Horizon Europe projecten. Dat is het EU-programma dat onderzoek en ontwikkeling subsidieert. Sinds de EU met Israël een associatieakkoord heeft afgesloten, kan Israël daar vrij aan deelnemen én heeft het al miljarden EU-onderzoeksgelden binnengehaald.
Sinds 7 oktober 2023 is de KU Leuven in verschillende projecten gestapt met Israëlische partners. Dat is niet onschuldig. Een voorbeeld. 1 maart 2025 was de startdatum van een project genaamd 'Edible soft matter: Training in soft matter science for sustainable food transition'. De Technion Research and Development Foundation is een van de partners. Het Technion is een technische universiteit die al decennia zeer nauw samenwerkt met de Israëlische wapenindustrie en de genocide tegen de Palestijnen mee mogelijk maakt.
Het is zonneklaar dat wachten op Belgische en Europese politieke daadkracht tegenover Israël moreel én juridisch geen optie is. Onze politieke leiders leggen Israël niets in de weg, integendeel. De KU Leuven moet dus zelf actie ondernemen en alle banden doorknippen met Israël en met bedrijven die Israël bewapenen. Dat is haar morele en juridische plicht. Elke betrokkene moet alles in het werk stellen om een genocide te voorkomen of te stoppen, of dat nu een overheid, een bedrijf of een universiteit is. We rekenen dus op een drastische koerswijziging van het nieuwe bestuur van de KU Leuven: knip de banden met Israël NU door!
Bij de opening van het academiejaar op woensdag 17 september trekken we de rode lijn voor de KU Leuven. Tijdens de stoet van de togati stellen we ons met honderden in het rood gekleed op langs het traject in de Naamsestraat. We trekken een symbolische rode lijn dwars over de Naamsestraat om duidelijk te maken dat de KU Leuven die rode lijn al tientallen keren heeft overschreden. De medeplichtigheid aan de genocide van de KU Leuven moet stoppen!

Red Line for KU Leuven
KU Leuven is collaborating on 52 projects with 26 Israeli partners or companies that arm Israel. You can find an overview at
https://academiccomplicity.be/. Most of these collaborations are part of Horizon Europe projects. This is the EU programme that subsidises research and development. Since the EU signed an association agreement with Israel, Israel has been able to participate freely and has already received billions in EU research funding.
Since 7 October 2023, KU Leuven has entered into various projects with Israeli partners. This is not innocent. An example: 1 March 2025 was the start date of a project called “Edible soft matter: Training in soft matter science for sustainable food transition”. The Technion Research and Development Foundation is one of the partners. The Technion is a technical university that has been working very closely with the Israeli arms industry for decades and is contributing to the genocide against the Palestinians.
It is crystal clear that waiting for Belgian and European political action against Israel is not an option, either morally or legally. Our political leaders are not standing in Israel's way, on the contrary. KU Leuven must therefore take action itself and sever all ties with Israel and with companies that arm Israel. That is its moral and legal duty. Everyone involved must do everything in their power to prevent or stop genocide, whether it be a government, a company or a university. We are therefore counting on a drastic change of course from the new board of KU Leuven: sever ties with Israel NOW!
At the opening of the academic year on Wednesday 17 September, we will draw a red line for KU Leuven. During the procession of the togati, hundreds of us dressed in red will line up along the route in Naamsestraat. We will draw a symbolic red line across Naamsestraat to make it clear that KU Leuven has already crossed that red line dozens of times. KU Leuven's complicity in genocide must stop!
