Don't miss Rick Collins at the 2025 MOMCC Fall Conference: Preserving History Through Living History
Join Rick and Firmitas for a preservation and repair discussion while addressing two significant buildings at the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site. We will demonstrate cutting joinery and replace two bad logs in-situ. Discussion topics will include: restoration strategy, documentation and stewardship choices as well as practical explanations of how the log work is done, finishes, and chinking (or not).
Attendees will watch work being performed, be introduced to common tooling and technique, and have the opportunity to see a 3-D scanner in action. Also covered will be labeling a log building for dismantle, heavy timber repair strategies, sourcing proper materials, appropriate hewing finishes, and corner connections utilized throughout the Midwest.
Join the discussion about planning, documentation (scanning, drawing), preparing bid documents, and more. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions, share personal experiences. Lively discussion and conversation will be encouraged.
