Queen's Medical Centre
Derby Road, Lenton, United Kingdom
(Starting: Friday 30th May)
This is a class exclusively for NHS staff working for Nottingham University Hospitals, with a focus on ‘Healthy Back’ Yoga.
Classes will include: fun warm-ups/activations, gentle flowing sequences, co-ordinated breathing with movement and a 10-minute relaxation. Movement will be based around the 6 directions of the spine (forwards, backwards, twisting and side bends) and postures which strengthen the supporting muscles (shoulder and hip girdle, core strength, glutes and hamstrings). Ideally, participants need to be able to get down to the floor and back up again, and chairs are available if needed.
Please bring a yoga mat, a blanket (for relaxation, sitting and kneeling postures) and water.
The above video shows a short 5-minute activation sequence to warm-up the spine. We always start a Dru class with warm-up to reduce injury and prepare muscles for stretching and strengthening.
Kath qualified as a Dru Yoga Teacher from the International School of Dru Yoga in Snowdonia, in 2013 and has post-graduate certificates in the Dru Healthy Back Programme and Mental Wellbeing Yoga. Her recovery from severe back injury using yoga techniques increased her passion to share these with others. Kath divides her time between working as a Speech and Language Therapist and teaching yoga. Over 30 years as a healthcare professional, Kath brings a fun and therapeutic style to her teaching to make classes as accessible for as many people as possible.
Dru Yoga is a graceful and potent style of yoga, based on flowing movements, controlled breathing, visualisation and affirmations, designed to relieve stress and calm the mind. These classes take inspiration from the Healthy Back Programme which was designed by physiotherapists, GPs and osteopaths. Research at Bangor University published in Occupational Medicine and the British Journal of Sports Medicine show Dru yoga can be effective for reducing stress, mechanical back pain and muscle injuries and improve feelings of wellbeing.
