About the event

Staged Reading, The Weight of Ink / Shakespeare & Company
I’m delighted to share that a wonderful set of theater directors over at Shakespeare and Company in Lenox, MA, have been working for several months now on a stage adaption of The Weight of Ink!

The goal is a full production, and the first step in that process—a performance of 30 minutes worth of staged scenes from the novel—will take place on Sunday, October 12 as part of the Celebrating Jewish Plays festival this Columbus Day weekend at Shakespeare & Company.

For those who aren’t familiar with Shakespeare & Company, you could not possibly find a more dynamic, innovative theater, or one in a more beautiful location. The company puts on both Shakespeare and non-Shakespeare productions, they do amazing work in schools, and they are just all-around inspiring. I have loved and followed their work for years.

The festival features staged readings of four remarkable Jewish plays: The Price by Arthur Miller, Roz & Ray by Karen Hartman, Here There are Blueberries by Moisés Kaufman and Amanda Gronich, and The Sisters Rosensweig by Wendy Wasserstein. Performances span Fri-Sun on Columbus Day weekend.

I hope you’ll consider coming for part or all of the festival—see the plays! walk the grounds! hike the beautiful Berkshires trails—this is prime leaf-peeping season! Explore all the amazing things the area has to offer! (Seriously, I love this area so much.)

And I hope you’ll stay for the Sunday afternoon / evening event. Kate Kohler Amory and Tamara Hickey have worked collaboratively with a small group of actors to develop these scenes from TWOI, and I can’t wait to see them in action. The scenes will be followed by a panel discussion--Kate, Tamara, and I will be on stage taking questions, with the amazing Letty Cottin Pogrebin moderating. And there will be a reception afterward.

So please, come out and support the theater company, and come help build momentum for staging a full adaptation in the future! And even if you can’t make it, please consider helping spread the word to friends you feel might be interested.

For more details, see the info below from the theater re ticket sales and schedules, and see this link for tickets; https://shakespeare.org/shows/2024/jewishplayfestival/

Warm wishes!
Rachel

Shakespeare & Co is always looking for ways to reach out to new audiences, as part of our mission of bringing great plays to the stage, both Shakespeare & Non-Shakespeare, that contain universal themes we can all relate to. This is especially important during times of division and polarization. Jewish tradition is known for storytelling, as a way to bring community together. These are the Voices of a People: The works of playwrights whose Jewish identities inform their works, sometimes implicitly, sometimes explicitly.

To this end, we are pleased to present Celebrating Jewish Plays: An Immersive Weekend of Staged Readings this October. Details below and on our website.
