Palaeontology Collection: View Leicester’s palaeontology collection without the crowds with a weekend pre-opening tour.

Pre-opening tours are £15 per person.

Enjoy a unique private tour of Leicester’s coveted Prehistoric Gallery. Meet the Rutland Dinosaur up close and personal, along with the region’s former fauna and flora. There will be a more in depth look at Charnia masoni and its significance in our understanding of the nature and validity of the Cambrian evolutionary explosion.

Group tours have a minimum group size of 15 and larger groups can be accommodated on request.

Image: © Leicester Museums and Galleries. Charnia masoni helped to upend over a century of research by demonstrating the existence of fossils older than the Cambrian period. Discovered by local schoolchildren, and named for the region where it was found, it is one of the most scientifically significant objects in the museum collection, and a globally significant fossil find.
