On Saturday, September 13th, it’s time to root for the underdog when the Mahoning Drive-In Theater presents a comedy SPORTS SLOBTACULAR that breaks all the rules, featuring two classic 1970s underdog sports sagas, THE BAD NEWS BEARS (1976) and SLAP SHOT (1977)!
What better way to celebrate summer than with two salutes to entertainingly unsportsmanlike conduct from the freewheeling 1970s that take children’s sports and Canada’s favorite pastime to new lows of rule-breaking and new highs of laughs?
First up at bat is the comedy classic that set the standard for decades of slob sports comedies (and resulted in two sequels, a TV series, and a remake), THE BAD NEWS BEARS! Rated PG.
Walter Matthau is a boozy, busted former pitcher who sees a nice payday in coaching a team of the worst players little league has to offer, but with a (beer) canny eye for talent, adds a female pitcher and local dirtbike tough to the team, resulting in an unforgettable season of scrapes, swears, swings, and scores! With Tatum O’Neal, Vic Morrow, and Jackie Earle Haley, and directed by Michael Ritchie (FLETCH, SEMI-TOUGH, WILDCATS).
Tickle (or crack) a rib with the Chiefs, a ragtag hockey team under the coachery of washed-up former player Paul Newman, who decides the only way to save the organization is to embrace the fine art of fighting dirty, with the aid of the infamous newly-traded Hanson brothers.
A slob comedy and sports movie classic that’ll put your blues on ice! With Strother Martin, Michael Ontkean, Melinda Dillon, and Lindsay Crouse, and directed by George Roy Hill (BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, THE STING). Rated R.
