Beginner Tote Bag Sewing Class

Learn the basics of sewing while creating a functional tote bag from start to finish. This beginner-friendly class covers essential sewing skills and machine use - no prior experience required. Students will design and construct a tote bag with a front pocket and straps that can be carried by hand or worn over the shoulder. Choose fabrics that reflect your personal style and leave with a handmade bag you’ll actually use.

What You’ll Learn

• Sewing machine basics and safety
• Cutting fabric using a pattern
• Sewing and finishing seams
• Hemming and topstitching
• Optional higher-level finishes, including French seams

Take Home

One completed tote bag and foundational sewing skills for future projects.

Materials Provided

• Sewing machines
• Tote bag pattern
• Ironing board and iron

Students may bring their own sewing machine if preferred.

What to Bring

Fabric (medium-weight, stable, NO stretch — cotton recommended):

• Main fabric: 1 m
• Lining fabric: 1 m
• Contrast fabric (optional): 0.5 m
• Thread (colour-matching)
• Strap (optional): 2 m, 1.5” (4 cm) wide (If not provided, straps will be sewn in class.)
