Buzz Bombs and Lace - WWII Army nurse’s letters and diary (Monthly Meeting)

- Topic: War raged in Europe as Nazi Germany advanced westward. After Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, nurse Oma Cartwright talked to her parents about plans to enlist in the Army Nurse Corps. They expressed their concerns, but also their support. By the time she was deployed overseas in December 1943, her father had died. Oma’s letters home, intended to allay her mother’s concerns, were written as if they were having a face-to-face conversation.

For the last couple of years, Oma’s son Charlie Nye, a retired journalist, has been digitizing Oma’s letters and diaries, weaving in historical details of significant wartime developments, as well as the 25th General Hospital’s moves throughout the European Theater. Ranging from accounts of close calls as bombs fell on their hospital complex to trips into quaint village shops to buy Belgian lace to mail home to her mother, Oma’s words reflect memories written on paper, but held in the heart.

- Come early for social time which begins at 6:00 PM to be followed by the program at 6:30 PM.
