About the event

Point Pelee National Park - Fall Migration
Canada's Point Pelee National Park along the shores of Lake Erie is one of the best inland locations to observe bird migration.

About this Event

Join Detroit Bird Alliance expert and eagle-eyed Leaders Jim Bull and Bruce Szczechowski as they explore the wonders of Canada's Point Pelee National Park.

Point Pelee National Park, located at the southernmost point of mainland Canada, is a 3,869 acre peninsula extending into Lake Erie. It's known for its diverse ecosystems, including marshlands, Carolinian forests, and beaches, and is a popular destination for birdwatching, particularly during migration seasons. Its location on migratory flyways and on the north shore of Lake Erie makes it a place that attracts a wide diversity of species in a very small area. In fall, the shape of the park acts like a funnel for day-time migrants following shorelines south, concentrating them at the tip. More than 390 species of birds have been recorded in the Point Pelee Birding Area, such as warblers and other songbirds, and various species of waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, gulls and terns.

Crossing into Canada requires a valid passport. An Enhanced Michigan Driver's license may also allow you entry into Canada, but check with local authorities to confirm.

Note that there is a toll to cross into Canada. Also, a per person Point Pelee National Park admission fee (about $7 per person). These fees are not covered by the fee for this field trip.

TRIP DETAILS:

Attendees will meet at the Point Pelee National Park Visitor Center at 9 AM where the group will take the free shuttle for a 7 minute ride to the tip's outdoor exhibit and the Tip Tower. From the shuttle drop off we will walk to the most southern tip of mainland Canada! The group will take the shuttle back to the Visitor Center and will have a chance to shop at their Nature Nook Gift Shop. The group will then caravan to the DeLaurie Homestead and Trail, the Marsh Boardwalk, and other sites within the park. The trails are mostly flat consisting of gravel and sections of boardwalk. There is a concession at the Marsh Boardwalk but it is recommended that attendees bring their own lunch. If conditions and time allow, the group may take an optional caravan trip to Hillman Marsh Conservation Area, located about 12 minutes from the entrance to Point Pelee National Park. Hillman Marsh has a birding trail that borders 87 acres of unique Shorebird Habitat where water levels are actively managed to create mudflats, providing outstanding viewing opportunities. The field trip will end at about 2 PM.
