Come out for a day or a weekend of climbing at Halifax's largest crag! The goal is to create a date we can all come together so that we can learn from one another. Main Face has continued to be a development hot spot, and there are a lot of new routes to explore this year. Throw in some experienced Main Face climbers from the community and it should help make the crag a lot more accessible to climbers that haven't spent much, or any time there.
When: October 25th and 26th
What: A weekend to bring the climbing community together
Where: Main Face on Paces Lake in Musquoduboit.
Who: Climbers... all skill levels welcome... that's you.
How: Park off of the side of the road and hike in either taking the north trail through the old iron gate, or the South Trail up the access road. Post in the comments here if you will need help with anchors or finding things. Someone will probably be able to help you when we all meet up.
Camping: Areas have been cleared for camping along Clifftop Lane, and there are areas at the top of the cliff and South trail that tents can be pitched.
Bring your ropes, draws, trad gear, friends and stoke. Or whatever you can muster. If you only have a harness you can still join in by wandering between parties that have gear and joining them! Don't be shy to share climbs, experiences, stories, and knowledge. The hope is that we can all learn something, so don't be shy to ask others if you need help. Keep in mind this is not an event, it is just a get together. Be kind, considerate and look out for one another, but we all need to remain responsible for ourselves.
We all need to act responsibly and ensure our own individual safety. Climbing and hiking near and on cliffs is inherently dangerous. We all climb and hike in these areas assuming responsibility for our own risks. We all need to respect the private land we are visiting when we climb at Main Face. Pack out everything you bring in, don't set fires or deface the property in any other way. If you feel like giving back, consider helping to keep the crag and paths clear of debris and garbage. If you are climbing always assume there might be someone below you. Do not throw things off of the cliff, and call rock if you dislodge anything. Call rope if you throw your rope for rappelling or top roping.
There are a few top rope friendly areas at Main Face:
1- Magister Ludi area, accessible by hiking to the south side of Main Face and looking for the sign near the point where the upper and lower trails join. There are two 5.11+ routes here with accessible bolted anchors.
2- Nate's Nook Area, not far south from Meat Grinder Rappel along the upper path. Look for the sign, there are climbs ranging from 5.8 to easy 5.11 that have accessible anchors. This area requires rappelling to a nice large ledge that can comfortably host a small group of climbers. There are rings that can be used to rappel to the lower path from this ledge.
3- High Ledge area not far north of the Meat Grinder Rappel along the upper trail. The sign is right in front of the Pop Corn top out. Several anchors here allow access to climbs that start on High Ledge with grades ranging from 5.6 to 5.10. High ledge can be accessed by rappelling from one of these anchors, none of which have rings, or by hiking a little farther north along the upper trail to the High Ledge path and hiking down to the ledge.
4-Splitting Coins area in E-Gully, accessible by hiking down to High Ledge, turning right at the ledge and hiking down to the rings for Splitting Coins. There are a few routes accessible from these rings with redirects ranging from 5.10 to 5.13.
