For The Record: New Works by Jack J. Collins

8 years ago the idea of painting on wood interested me. Being a poor carpenter, 90 degree angles, building stretchers, attaching and priming canvas frustrated me — I’m not that precise.

Another method was needed. I had saws. I had drills. I had paint and screws. Inexpensive thin 8’ x 4’ sheets of underlayment wood and 1” x 2” furring strips became my canvas. Before long I was smashing and breaking wood with sledgehammers and crowbars and my feet. And attaching them together with dry wall screws and nails and glue. Each session I added and subtracted, painted and often destroyed. Lots of destruction. Saved the pieces of smashed wood and started new paintings with them. Then continued tearing apart and reconstructing and cannibalizing until I arrived at the work that excited me. The process continues today.

Perhaps at the end I will have one painting and 1000’s of scraps and a well examined navel.
