This training explores the Seven Core Issues of Adoption—loss, rejection, guilt and shame, grief, identity, intimacy, and control—and examines how these themes often emerge within the sandtray and play therapy process. Participants will engage in experiential sandtray practice and guided processing, while learning trauma-informed and attachment-focused strategies to support emotional expression, strengthen family relationships, and promote healing.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the Seven Core Issues of Adoption and their impact on adoptive children and families within the context of play therapy and family therapy sessions.
  2. Discuss the therapeutic role of sandtray play therapy in addressing grief, loss, rejection, identity, guilt/shame, intimacy, and control in adoptive clients, while exploring how these issues emerge in family therapy sessions.
  3. Identify common clinical challenges therapists encounter when addressing the Seven Core Issues of Adoption in sandtray play therapy sessions and family therapy sessions, and outline strategies to support both children and their families.
