With bills, laundry, and countless errands during our day-to-day, we often don't get opportunities to just slow down. In this artist-led workshop, participants will have space to simply look, absorb, and discover!
Facilitated by artist Nasir Young, the session will begin with an interactive gallery tour of STOMPING GROUND, in which attendees will discuss what slowing down means to them, and reflect on personal space. Although each artist in the exhibition has a unique practice of their own, participants will be encouraged to explore principles of observation that can be applied universally as they consider the unique practices and approaches found throughout the exhibition.
After the tour there will be a quick Q&A, and the workshop will conclude with several sketching exercises in which participants will seek out moments and sites of interest around the gallery.
These instances could be light hitting a corner just right, or the view from a window. While sketching, participants will train their eyes to foster a greater sense of wondrous inquiry.
After sketching, participants will reassemble for a quick "show and tell" to showcase each other's discoveries.
Each participant will go home with their own sketchbook to take home, along with a keener eye for finding beauty within the seemingly mundane.
Attendees may opt to bring their own sketchbook and drawing materials but materials will also be available during the workshop. This event is suitable for ages 10+ but minors aged 10-16 must be registered with an accompanying adult.
Public gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays, noon - 4 pm.
