Conservation Green Burial

Green burials and/or conservation burials are environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional burial practices, focusing on sustainability and minimal environmental impact. In a green burial, the body is interred without embalming fluids, in a biodegradable coffin or shroud, allowing for natural decomposition. This practice emphasizes simplicity, conservation, and a return to the earth in a way that supports ecological balance.

As part of our ongoing series on end of life issues, we are pleased to welcome Amanda Peckman, Director of Kings Mountain Preserve’s Conservation Green Cemetery, headquartered in Blacksburg, SC, to explain how the process works and what options are available to those considering alternatives to more traditional interment.

Amanda Peckman became interested in this subject when she saw how her love for people and nature intersected in the practices of conservation burial. Death has always been a prominent presence in her life. Experiencing the mark of grief on her family from a young age has made her sensitive to the fragility of life. Amanda’s friends would describe her as a lifelong learner, an empathetic conversationalist, and a passionate advocate. She lives and loves in North Carolina with her husband and their 3 children. We’re lucky to have her speak!
