Peter Gell : The Ecology of Obligation - Shifting Baselines and Everchanging Wetlands

The talk reveals the everchanging nature of wetlands, our curious perception of 'natural' and our obligations to maintain 'ecological character' within 'acceptable' limits, to retain ecosystem services and to abide by wise use.

Bio: Peter Gell is a paleoecologist and ornithologist who has published, as first author, over 50 papers on wetland change to place present condition in long term context. Born in Melbourne, his research has seen him live in Paris, Loughborough (UK), Birmingham (UK), Salvador (Brazil), Adelaide and Ballaarat. He is Emeritus Professor at Federation University and Adjunct Professor at the Cluster for Paleolimnology, Diponegoro University (Indonesia). He led the Aquatic Transitions working group of the global research project Past Global Changes and is a PAGES Fellow. He was the 2019 recipient of the Jolly medal for research excellence awarded by the Australian Freshwater Sciences Society. He was lead editor (2023) of Ramsar Wetlands: Values, Assessment, Management.
