Enhancing Person-Centered Dementia Communication
Join us in Wharton Hall, room 222. This 3-hour session includes a screening of the documentary Remember Me: Dementia in the African American Community, followed by a community panel discussion. The film explores the cultural, personal, and systemic dimensions of dementia care in African American communities. After the screening, local experts, a care partner, and an individual living with dementia will share their experiences and insights. Attendees will reflect on culturally responsive, person-centered communication approaches in dementia care. This session is designed for speech-language pathologists, related professionals, community members, and local citizens interested in inclusive, community-engaged dementia support practices.
Learners Objectives: 1. Identify at least two cultural or systematic barriers to communication access for people living with dementia in African American communities. 2. Describe culturally responsive communication approaches that support more inclusive dementia care. 3. Apply at least one new strategy to improve communication access in their clinical practice based on insights from the film and panel.
There will be an assessment at the end of the course for learners receiving 0.30 ASHA CEUs.
