About the event

“Alternative Transportation Perspectives and Opportunities” Week Without Driving
Please join us for a special Sunday Service and discussion afterwards in collaboration with La Crosse's Week Without Driving!

Unitarian Universalist values of Justice, Equity, Transformation, Generosity, and Interdependence call us to improve our transportation system locally. Join longtime bus rider Kristie Neve for stories to help us overcome misconceptions about what it means to take a bus. Gain perspective on the breadth of impacts and possibilities with transit advocate Matthew Christen. They’ll highlight where we’re at, where we need to go, and tips on how we can get there. Take baby steps the following week by joining the Week Without Driving Bingo challenge organized by La Crosse Area Transit Advocates. We promise no shaming: only possibilities for personal growth and real action as a fellowship.

Kristie Neve – Born 1947, Lansing, Michigan; car capital of the world. Kristie matured at a time when “See the USA in your Chevrolet” was part of the American dream. She never bought into the carmaker’s dream. Her personal independence began with walking to school. Walking has long been her preferred means of motion. Driving and car ownership wasn’t a goal. Public transportation was an option (bicycle culture hadn’t begun). Being a lifelong non-driver taught her planning, logistics and, most importantly, compassion for the stranger. Today, being a non-driver never felt so “hip.” Matthew Christen has been immersed in the world of Active Transportation for many years with advocacy, as a nationally certified cycling instructor, bike shop owner, director for Everybody Bikes UA non-profit, speaker, and has bicycled over 25,000 miles around La Crosse in the last 20 years.

Following the service --> Got questions about the logistics and realities of La Crosse’s public transit options? Kristie Neve has been around the block, and she’s got suggestions on how to help reduce worries. Join an informal discussion in the conference room after service for practical tips. These can even help you win prizes in this week’s local Week Without Driving bingo challenge. You don’t have to change your life or even go a week without driving in order to make a difference for yourself and others in our community.
