All tournaments are bring-your-own-steel. Please note that you need 350 N certified protective gear and be at least 18 years of age to compete. Swedish participants need a competition card.
The event setup will only have one registration, meaning that you can participate in as many tournaments as you want, in whichever weapons. Registration for a tournament is done right before each tournament.
Our goals with Battle of the Bridge are the following:
- Offering an event with a strong beginner focus, to balance out the many prestigious events in the Nordic region. We want this event to be a good first or second tournament, but at the same time offer good quality bouts for more seasoned fencers.
- Continuing to work against a possible stagnation of the Nordic scene by offering a variation in both tournament setup and ruleset.
Giving fencers a lot of bouts to give them great value for their money.
- Organising an event that’s professional and of high quality, but at the same time relaxed and friendly with a clear learning focus, rather than a prestigious event for fencers to train for.
How do we plan to achieve these goals?
- The tournaments will be fought on mats that are 4x8 meters. This allows us to have way more mats than if we would use full 8x8 meter mats.
- We will also use a 1 referee + 1 judge system, which means a mat can be staffed by just 3 people (ref, judge and table) instead of 10 people using a full judging staff. This reduces the staff-size needed per mat and therefore keeps the cost for the fencers down. Naturally, this means that the quality of the calls will go down, but for us this is an acceptable tradeoff. We are trading way more quantity for a bit less quality.
- We also want to open up for experiments with alternative classes/tournaments and this is where you come in. Let us know if you have any suggestions on a tournament you would like to try.
It is important for us that this event is a communal effort, meaning that all fencers are expected to staff at least one tournament. We are very happy to get volunteers who are willing to practice their judging in a relaxed tournament enviroment and we hope that many fencers choose to help out the event by staffing more than just one tournament. The staffing will be administrated on site and we hope that this can be done in a spirit of community.
