Palestinian Women in the Crosshairs: Overt and covert forms of violence

The genocide in Gaza has been going on for two years, with no sign of abating. It continues to intensify against the backdrop of a long history of silence on the part of the so-called international community, and indeed of active complicity in most cases. Witness the rush on the part of all sectors of society to join the chorus shouting ‘Do you condemn Hamas’ at anyone denouncing the relentless bombing of Gaza at the beginning and for a long time after the start of the genocide, and the widespread adoption of the 7 October narrative as the starting point for the ‘conflict’. This talk will attempt to set the moral and intellectual failure of the media, the politicians, international institutions, NGOs and the academy since 1948 against the backdrop of what has been happening to Palestinian women for decades and the unspeakable violence to which they are currently being subjected in Gaza. While refuting the widespread assumption that Palestinian men are suspect and hence are fair game for Israel’s killing machine by virtue of being men, and at the risk of portraying Palestinian women merely as passive victims, the emphasis will be on exposing the various forms of violence to which Palestinian women – mothers, daughters, grandmothers, infants and even the unborn – have been subjected throughout the Israeli occupation of Palestine, with particular focus on the current situation in Gaza.
