Cobb Building Workshop
Saturday22nd and Sunday23rd November
By the end of this course, you will have contributed to the construction of a real cob wall, gained hands-on experience, and developed confidence in building with cob.
You'll learn to:
Understand the key ingredients of cob and how they interact.
Identify and test local soils for cob suitability.
Make cob by hand and foot using traditional methods.
Build and shape cob walls.
Understand foundations & weather protection
Day 1: Saturday
8:00 AM – Welcome, stretching, and introductions: sharing how we arrived here.
What is Cob? – A brief history, philosophy, and examples.
Instruction and Mixing Cob – Learning the basics of cob preparation.
Mixing Cob: Hands-on mixing session
Lunch
Apply cob using the spine and ribs method.
Structural basics including dead men & threaded bar
Our Story: Photos and a talk about other cob buildings .
Q&As

Day 2: Sunday
Breakfast
8:00 AM
Mix cob for the day.
Learn about cob drying, shrinkage, and curing processes.
Cutting back walls to make them plumb.
Applying clay slip to improve bonding
Building with cob: Applying new layers and refining the wall.
Lunch
Introduction to Foundations: Types of foundations
Soil Testing: Identifying local soil types and testing for cob
Tidy up lose ends
