Behind the Inkblot: Art & Psychology Through the Rorschach Test

The Rorschach inkblot test was introduced as a psychiatric diagnostic instrument in 1921. The inkblots possessed no defined shapes. However, to trained observers, they reveal deeper aspects of the human psyche. This concept closely relates to the pieces in our exhibition Karel Appel: Cats. By comparing our perceptions of amorphous inkblots, we can better understand Appel’s artistic style and intention.

Join us for this program featuring a hands-on activity with Timothy Hulsey, Associate Professor of Psychology, as we dive into a process that is both part of history and a part of pop culture.



About the instructor:

Timothy L. Hulsey: is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Tennessee. From 2013- 2020 he served as Associate Provost and Director of Honors & Scholars Programs at UT. From 2004 to 2013 he served as Associate Professor of Psychology and Dean of the Honors College at Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to that, he served as Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the University Honors Program at Texas State University.
