What is Social Learning?
Social learning means acquiring information and behaviors from the observation of others.
Recent ethological studies revealed the social cognitive abilities of dogs and demonstrated that they are surprisingly
predisposed to learn socially from humans.
What is Do as I Do?
“Do as I Do” is a new training method based on dog’s social cognitive skills, particularly on their predisposition to
learn from humans. With this technique dogs will learn new behaviours by observing and imitating their owners.

What is the Seminar about?
During the seminar, Dr. Fugazza and the Trainers of the Do as I Do Team will explain the scientific studies on social learning in dogs, which are the basis of the Do as I Do training method. The cognitive abilities implicated in different forms of social learning will be discussed.
The lecturers will then describe how to progress through the Do as I Do training protocol, from the Foundation Training to teaching dogs the “imitation rule” and how to progress through the training protocol. After learning the Foundation, dogs will be taught to imitate a small set of familiar actions (actions already trained with traditional techniques) and will then generalize this rule. At the end of the training protocol, the owner will be able to teach
new behaviors to his dog, simply showing them what to do.
Program:
1) FOUNDATION WEBINAR ONLINE 3. June 2025 - 17:00 - 19:00
The Trainer will explain the basis which constitutes a fundamental requisite to be able to start the Do as I Do Training
protocol. A few dogs of the participants will be used as demonstrators, to show how to train the Foundation.
2) TUTORING TO PREPARE THE FOUNDATION - 15. June a whole day practical workshop with Birgitte Lauritzen held at Slotsgårdsvej 4, 9293 Kongerslev Denmark.
In this workshop the students that candidate to participate in the live seminar with demonstrator dogs (max. 8 dogs) will get extra guidance and training to prepare for the Seminar in September. This will be important study material for all the students and will allow them to train their dogs to be able to proceed through the Do as I Do training in parallel with the seminar.
3) Q&A Zoom meeting with Birgitte Lauritzen - 1. August! All participants have the option to meet up and get all questions answered about the preparation before the Live Seminar.
4) 1. September will all participants with dog have sent in the training video of their dogs for a valuation. Don´t worry you will get all the help you need :-)

About Dr. Claudia Fugazza, PhD
• PhD in Ethology (Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest)
• Post Graduated Master in Ethology (University of Pisa)
• Post Graduated Master in Dog Training (University of Pisa)
• BSC in Dog Breeding and Dog Training - TACREC (University of Pisa)
I work as a Researcher at the Department of Ethology at Eotvos Lorand University (Budapest) and I conduct research
on dogs’ social cognitive abilities.
I teach social learning in dogs at the University of Pisa and Padova and give several seminars on this topic
