Join us for a hands-on Biochar Workshop and Burn hosted by Fairport Farm and Working Landscapes! Biochar is a natural soil amendment made by charring wood under special conditions. Jason Maynard and Jon White, of Working Landscapes, will lead a workshop all about the benefits of biochar, how to make it, and how to use it to boost your production. The workshop will integrate a presentation with a live biochar burn demonstration using the Ring of Fire biochar kiln, which is available free-to-rent from Working Landscapes.
Topics to be covered:
What is Biochar? – A simple explanation of its properties and origins.
Benefits of Biochar – How it supports soil health, crops, and the environment.
Making Biochar – Methods for producing it safely and effectively. With a hands-on burn!
Charging Biochar – Preparing it with nutrients before use.
Applying Biochar – Best practices for incorporating it into soil.
Along with learning about Biochar, we'll also have vegetarian chili and a potluck for lunch. Everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to share. Please bring your own bowl and spoon.
This workshop is designed for farmers, landholders, and community members interested in sustainable agriculture and climate-smart practices. Please come ready to have fun, learn, and get your hands dirty.
