Natural Dye Workshop

Learn how to grow and use plants for dyeing natural colours with Deborah Gray.

You will learn:

In this session we will start to plan a dye garden, looking at the colours given by a range of dye plants and how to grow them.

You will also learn a method of dyeing natural fibres with plant dyes which is kind to the environment and easy to do at home as it does not require lots of special equipment. We will take a walk to the community garden to gather plant materials to dye a piece of material that you will bring along.

You will need:

If you would like to try out the natural dyeing, you will need to bring:

• Large glass jar with a good lid (2-litre kilner jars ideal, but any jar over 1-litre with a good seal will work)
• Materials to dye - wool, yarn, or silk, maximum 40 grams per jar (should be natural white, pale cream or grey and very clean)
• Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for a walk down to the community garden.

Deborah Gray is a textile artist based in Oban where she leads the EcoCreative Dye Garden at The Rockfield Centre. She runs workshops on natural dyeing, botanical printing, spinning, knitting and stitching in her own studios at Artspace Oban.
