Echoes of the Night: McKaig Bat Viewing.
Just in time for Halloween! Join McKaig Nature Education Center and Dr. Brandi C., Research Scientist from Bat Conservation International, for a fascinating evening exploring the secret life of bats.
This unique educational program will begin with a short classroom discussion at the historic Old Roberts Schoolhouse, where you'll learn about Pennsylvania's native bat species—including the Little Brown Bat and the Big Brown Bat—their critical role in controlling local insect populations, and the threat of White-Nose Syndrome.
Following the discussion, we'll head to the McKaig (Alderbrook) pond shore just as the sun sets to observe these nocturnal hunters. This is the optimal time to witness the "big rush" of foraging activity, particularly as bats skim the water to drink and hunt emerging aquatic insects. Using specialized ultrasonic equipment, we'll listen in on their echolocation calls, giving you a chance to experience the environment from a bat's perspective.
Don't miss this engaging opportunity to connect with these vital local creatures!
